Keep Melbourne Water Public

Keep Melbourne Water Public

Melbourne Water Is Not for Sale

Water is not a commodity—it is a public trust.

Victorians are deeply concerned by any suggestion that Melbourne Water or Victoria’s publicly owned water infrastructure could be privatised. Melbourne Water manages the waterways, reservoirs, sewerage and drainage systems that support more than five million people and protect the health of Port Phillip Bay, Western Port, our rivers, wetlands and beaches.

Sign this petition today to send a clear message to the Victorian Government: Keep our water public, protect our beaches and waterways, and learn from Britain’s disastrous experience before it is too late.

Water for people. Water for nature. Water for future generations.

To the Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Victoria,

We have seen what happens when governments sell water assets.

Britain’s experiment with water privatisation has been nothing short of a disaster. Since water services in England and Wales were privatised in 1989, private companies have paid billions of dollars to shareholders while sewage pollution has increased dramatically. Rivers and beaches have been repeatedly contaminated, infrastructure has deteriorated, and taxpayers have ultimately been left to bear the cost of failures.

Victoria must not repeat these mistakes.

Our oceans, beaches and waterways are already facing growing pressures from sewage overflows, nutrients, PFAS, microplastics, pharmaceuticals and other pollutants. Public ownership ensures that decisions about water management are made in the interests of communities and the environment—not private shareholders.

By signing this petition, I call on the Victorian Government, the State Opposition and all government members to:

  • Publicly commit that Melbourne Water will remain in public ownership.
  • Introduce legislation preventing the future privatisation or sale of Melbourne Water and other Victorian water assets.
  • Protect Victoria’s rivers, bays, oceans and beaches from increasing pollution.
  • Increase investment in wastewater infrastructure and advanced treatment technologies.
  • Ensure all Victorian water authorities remain transparent, accountable and focused on environmental outcomes.

Melbourne Water belongs to the people of Victoria. It is an essential public service that protects our health, supports our economy and safeguards the natural environment we cherish.

Melbourne Water is not for sale.
